TV CAN IMPROVE YOUR THINKING, READING, WRITING SKILLS!

As a teacher I was concerned that we only showed PBS-type programs at school while at home the students were watching everything from soaps, cartoons, and MTV to Hallmark Playhouse and award-winning films. I decided to bring commercial TV into the classroom so they could see and understand these very different programs through a set of more critical and informed eyes - mine. I found that I could teach them comprehension skills that I could then transfer to their reading. I helped many minority nonreaders or remedial readers improve ONE to SIX grade levels in ONE year.

As their THINKING skills improved, they wanted to and were able to explore more types of reading materials - from signs to books. They understood more so they read books, magazines, newspapers, and ads. They were amazed at how little they had understood in the TV and movies they had watched. Once they understood plot, theme, scene, action, flow, and character development they would challenge one another in predicting WHAT a character would do next - and WHY! They were THINKING people.
