John Holt, Jonathan Kozol, and other teachers and educational writers have written about what they said they saw or did in a classroom. This shows, through the eyes of trained observers who were social scientists the techniques I have developed and written about in my books.
FIVE weeks under a microscope
I believe that I am the only teacher-writer who
was observed Every Day, All Day, for FIVE WEEKS (October -November 1978) and everything I said and did was recorded by a scientific team of ethnographers working under a grant from the
U.S.Dept.of Education to examine HOW teachers INTEGRATED minority children. (From 1986 to 1995 I used many of these techniques in an award-winning middle school At-Risk program.)
Who will benefit from this book
For legislators, educators, parents, or anyone interested in the real
nitty-gritty of our schools, this book and the others above give
hope and specific ways to dramatically improve schools to be more
effective, democratic, AND child-friendly.
